Cue Stick Shopper’s Guide – Finding the Best Cue Stick

You simply have to have the best cue stick if you want to be the best at billiards. While it is true that a good cue stick does not a billiards champion make, it does allow you to enjoy the game. As such, the best cue simply means the most comfortable one for every individual. What might feel right for one player may not necessarily be just as great for another. Shopping for billiard cue sticks is always a matter of personal preference more than anything.

Irish linen cue sticks

The best cue stick is typically made of wood and coated with Irish linen wraps. A good one can be made of any type of hardwood including maple, ash and rose. It is quite durable so wood cues are more appropriate for seasoned players and those who frequently enjoy a game of billiards to spare the time. The good thing about wood cue sticks is that they are great for practically any skill level. They are designed to provide optimum comfort in playing for the user.

But if money is an issue, you can opt for the next best thing when it comes to cue sticks: the nylon wrap varieties. These are also made of hardwood but they are covered with nylon to make them more durable. This type of cue stick also comes with replacement tips, soft cue cases and chalk pieces among other accessories.

Choosing the right stick

As earlier mentioned, personal preference is an important factor when it comes to the best cue stick. But as a wise consumer, you want to set your sights for sticks that are made of good hardwood because they are split resistant. Hardwood cues are also capable of absorbing ball impacts more efficiently. Irish lined is still the best among the covered cue varieties.

History of Billiards

Historical records about the exact genesis place and form of the game of billiards is inaccurate and ambiguous. The word billiard is derived from the French word ‘Bille” meaning ball, referring to a game involving ball and stick, and “art” meaning the art of playing the game. Although the French have given new meaning and life to the game, refining, evolving and popularizing it, they cannot claim to have invented it. Billiards was played as an out door lawn game, resembling golf or croquet, in Northern Europe during the 1500 century.

The first actual evidence of billiards was found in the 1470 inventory of King Louis XI of France in the form of a billiard game board. However, lawn games t originated from bat and ball games played as early as the 1300 century. Historians are unclear about the reasons for the evolution of these games. Whether it was merely for entertainment or served some social or religious functions in ancient times is still an intriguing debate among historians.

Billiards graduated to indoor games and became popular among aristocrats and commoners in France by the mid 1500′s. Billiards a game of subtle physical deliverance, profound concentration and metal agility allowed fair play and equal footage to players of both sexes. By the mid 1600′s, the table version similar to today’s games appeared. The innovations of the cue, in the 1700′s, lead to the disappearance of the mace that was initially used. Soon, billiards acquired its status as a scientific game with precisely designed equipment, manufacturing plants for tables, standardized rules, etc.

The leather cue tip initially designed by Captain Minguard for protection of the cue added a new dimension to the game. By 1850′s, billiards invaded most of the world. In 1826, England’s John Thurstion changed the wooden game board to slate. By 1797, new fabric replaced cotton or wool to improve smoothness and friction. Balls evolved from wood to ivory to the present Colloidal coated plastic form by 1869.

Perfecting the Billiard Masse Shot

Like many other billiard trick shots, the masse utilizes spin, or “english,” to maneuver the cue ball around an obstacle ball, then kick it back to strike the object ball. To better understand the motion of a masse shot, imagine how the Earth rotationally spins on its axis in free space as opposed to how the Earth revolves in its orbit around the sun. A masse shot is a way of spinning the cue ball on its axis in a different motion from which the cue ball is traveling, just as the Earth both rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun at the same time. Most often, the masse shot is most useful when a third ball is in direct line with the cue ball and the object ball, therefore transforming that third ball into an obstacle. At certain times, and if performed correctly, the billiard masse can be the best shot option, even more so than the jump shot. However, several points come into play and must be thoroughly practiced before you can execute the masse shot with efficiency and effectiveness.

When shooting the cue ball around an obstacle ball, it is often best to perform the masse as softly and smoothly as possible. When practicing, try arching your pool cue by raising your back arm and elbow. Doing this will create a much bigger target on the cue ball. Also, try different shot angles up against a rail or cushion, as rail shots many times call for a masse. Using the rail also allows you to eyeball and somewhat measure the curve angles, kicks, and various distances of the ball’s orbit and travel paths, helping to better understand where to strike the cue ball with your pool cue for various shots.

While practicing, it is best to use a striped ball so you can easily view the rotation of the ball’s axis using varying angles and cue arc. Using the cue ball or a solid for masse practice makes it much more difficult to see any rotation. To practice different shots, try to maintain one stroke speed and arc while frequently changing up both the angle of the pool cue and the contact point of the pool cue tip. This will help you to remember how the ball moves with each different stroke. Take note of these different ball movements during practice and try to remember them. Again, using the long cushion as a guideline when learning masse stroke speeds, pool cue angles, and cue tip placement will greatly benefit your learning curve.

Always remember that regardless of how hard or soft the shot is supposed to be, the cue ball must be struck swiftly with accuracy and follow-through. If the pool cue stroke is not direct and confident, the cue ball will not take spin on its axis and will not masse, but simply curve, not allowing it to kick back into the object ball.

Most often, unless you are extremely confident in your abilities, the masse should be used as a last resort. If the object ball is towards the middle of the billiard table, try something besides a masse stroke. Check for other options, such as a possible bank shot, combination shot, english off of the rail, or simply shooting at a different shot if available. If you have any doubts about your masse shooting abilities, then choose another approach to the object ball. Even though the masse shot is used regularly in most all billiard games, it is a trick shot (since it uses tricky english and weird angles and strokes) and should be mastered with continuous practice before being utilized on a regular basis. However, if diligently practiced over and over, the masse can become as easy as any normal, straight shot into the corner pocket.

Billiard Rules – What You Need To Know Before Entering Any Billiard Tournament Or Competition

Billiard Tables

Finding good billiard rules is important to improving your game. As with just about any sport nowadays, billiards has quite a few rules that you need to learn in order to play effectively; whether you want 8 ball pool rules, 9 ball pool rules, regular BCA pool rules, or any other kind, here is a quick guide of official pool rules to help you learn the billiard rules as quickly as possible.

First of all, here are some quick pool table rules you must observe when starting the game. When racking the ball, the ball must always be racked using a triangle. Without this, you can never start the game legally. The apex ball has to be at the foot spot, and all the other balls you to be making contact with each other.

Keep in mind, the only legal shots that will count are ones that were the cue ball is struck with the cue tip. If you fail to pocket any ball during any shot, then it is your opponents turned ago.

Another rule that is extremely important billiard rule is the one that is use in order to decide who gets to play first. For this, balls are shot by both players at exactly the same time, from opposite ends of the table. From here, whichever ball is nearest to the high cushion is the one that wins out, and that person gets to go first.

Of course, when you hit while any ball that is currently in motion, that is automatically illegal. The stroke is only completed one all the ball to stop moving; if you hit any ball before another ball to stop moving, that is against the rules and you will lose a turn.

Of course, all these billiard rules are a moot point if your equipment doesn’t meet the standards of the BCA equipment specifications. All your tables, balls come equipment must meet these specifications. Make sure you find this out before entering any tournament or competition.

During the break shot, if you either stop or deflect the cue ball once it has crossed over the head spring and before it hit any of the other balls, this is certainly illegal, and will cause you lose a turn.

The rule for pocketed balls are as follows; any ball is considered a pocketed ball if, during the course of a regular shot, it falls off the table into a pocket and stays there. If it falls out of the ball return system and onto the floor, then it is not a pocketed ball, because do not stay in the pocket.

Also, the position the ball is always determined by where the center of it is currently at. In addition, when firing, both of your feet must be on the floor at the same time. If they are not, this is considered illegal, and you can lose a turn.

Remember, no stroke is finished until every ball is come to a complete stop. While these are simply some basic billiard rules, they are essential if you want to become a serious billiards player. Of course, if you simply want to play for fun, they are not all that important; however, if you plan on playing in a tournament, or against some more serious competition, it is absolutely imperative that you know these rules.

Billiard Clothing – Pool Players Seem To Like Clothing With Billiards Pictures And Phrases

Billiard clothing is sure to be found at any major pool tournament or billiards trade show. You will find many shirts with pool and billiards pictures and sayings. Hats and visors are also a pretty popular items. Coats and jackets with some pretty cool pics and phrases will be found at these events as well.

I picked up some of my first billiard clothing in Las Vegas (BCA Tournament) back in the early 90′s. I purchased one five dollar raffle ticket and won a $300 shopping spree for billiards clothing. This was pretty cool because one of my friends had just purchased 4 five dollar tickets and I said it only takes one and sure enough I won the raffle.

The following year my girl friend at the time, purchased one ticket from the same vendors while I was shooting pool in a singles match. Sure enough we won again. (What are the odds of that? lol) We picked out some cool jackets on this one and put them on so we didn’t have to carry them around.

We went to the table where my friend was playing a match and he looked up and asked, What’s up with the jackets? He then said, you didn’t win that thing again Jack? I just smiled and said yes we did. He then proceeded to pull about 10 tickets out of his pocket, throw them on the floor and stomp on them.

Winning these two raffles back to back was cool. It set me up with $600 in billiard clothing for $10. I had shirts, jackets, hats and a few misc. billiards accessories.

I purchase a couple of shirts in Vegas every year. They have the year of tournament, they state that the tournament was at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and they say North American 8 Ball championship. I am wearing one right now as I type this article.

The other common places to find billiard clothing is in Billiards magazines such as Inside Pool or Billiards Digest. You will also find quite a selection on eBay if you search billiards. Type billiards clothing into Google and you will find many items as well.

If you play billiards in your local leagues, you may want to ask the tavern owner who sponsors your team about getting jackets or shirts or both. I have 4 jackets which I won from the APA tournaments in our area and one jacket which was given to me by the owner of the pool room where we play league. (Diamond Jim’s)

I have more shirts from the various leagues which I have played in than I can count. If you are way into the game as I am, it can be cool to wear clothing that Say’s so. A word of warning however. If you are looking to play for some money, having a shirt on that talks about an 8 ball championship can kill your action.

Post your questions, comments and stories below about you and your billiard clothing.

To your run out success.

Pool tables and snooker tables or billiard tables have for long been associated with high fashion of the rich and the famous. In recent years though, the trend has been changing. What was earlier restricted to the posh and the world uptown, has been slowly finding its way to the downtown alleys. Most pubs and gaming zones around the country are now equipped with not one but a multiple number of pool tables. Enthusiasts of the game are no longer limited to the high-class clubs, but have found their way to the local high school and even middle school.

Manufacturers of pool tables too have had to change their business strategies for the same reason. The pool tables available now are no longer very expensive. They are in fact quite affordable. This is not to say that designer pool tables, which reek of sophistication and class, have disappeared altogether. They are still very much there, as exquisite as ever.

Proper Billiard Stance

Billiard Tables

No two players will have the same billiard stance. Even just in holding the pool stick, there are several variations. However, there are some things that will never change. The basic preparations before starting are still needed. The things that are necessary are the head alignment, balance, and positioning and angle of your shooting arm.

The correct billiard stance dictates that the shooter’s head should be aligned with the aim line of the cue. The cue should be aligned with your nose. Your nose is the center of your head. If it isn’t possible, it’s alright to have it a little off-center as long as it is closer to your dominant eye. Always check to see if your head is perpendicular to the floor. It shouldn’t be slightly off to either left or right side. This is of course difficult to do alone. If possible, try to have a friend observe you while practicing. Another option is to videotape yourself. The problem with this is that you are aware someone is watching you. The best option would be to play a lot of practice games and tell a friend to always keep watch. After some time, you will forget that you asked him to watch your stance. He can then tell you what you were doing wrong.

To perfect your stroke, you also need to have proper body balance. Focus on minimizing all other body movements during your shot. Only your swinging arm should be in motion. If you feel an itch coming, you should take care of it at once. Once you have proper balance, your body movement will be very low. Other players prefer a wider stance. This way, your weight is distributed evenly on each leg. The principle behind center of gravity is the basis behind this. If your center of gravity is within your body’s displacement, you will not fall out of balance. Lastly, the same foot should be lead as your arm. The arm you use to bridge the cue. Avoid any unnatural stances. Keep it simple. If you try to show off, you might end up throwing your shot since your body will try to retain a comfortable position.

Thankfully, if you are playing online you don’t have a lot of problems to consider. One is your line of sight towards the monitor. Your hands should be comfortable since both will be in use. The keyboard and mouse should be spaced not so much so that your hands will not be strained.
